Did you know your name is a valuable digital asset? More importantly your personal domain name is a digital asset you should add to your online portfolio. It’s likely more than one person on this earth shares your first and last name, which is all the more reason to purchase your domain name.

You don’t have to be a household name in order for purchasing your domain name to make sense.  Even if you never have the chance to walk the red carpet or become a famous celebrity, owning your name may be worth more than gold.

What would you do if someone owned your name? Think it can’t happen? Think about the last time someone ticked you off online?  Prime opportunity to purchase that name is all I’m saying. However, if sticking it to the other person is not your thing, there are a few reasons why purchasing your own personal domain name makes perfect sense.

1. Control What Search Engines Say About You

When was the last time you searched your name online? You can protect your reputation and manage what’s being said online about you.

When someone searches your name on Google, Bing or Yahoo, the content associated with your domain name will show up. The more quality content you produce, the more your name will show up in search engines. This includes, websites, blogs, slideshare presentations, images and video content.

2. Build Your Personal Brand

You can control what others see in relation to your name. Show off a little and present your best material using your domain name.

Thinking about selling an e-book? Create a landing page using your personal domain name to promote your book. Additionally, when you share content on social media websites, your domain name will show up in search engines. Thus, reader are more likely to associate your work with your name.

3. Create a Portfolio to House Your Files

Even if you decide never to use your domain name to develop content via a website or blog, your domain name is optimal place to house your files including articles, presentations and multimedia files as photos and videos.

Remember, owning your personal domain name is a key first step to creating a strong online presence and developing digital assets for your online portfolio.
